As men, we face countless challenges, but one of the most difficult to overcome is our own stubborn pride.
Leading a men’s group recently, I was struck by a prayer request for an older gentleman. He was facing that dreaded phase of life when we need help with the simplest self-care tasks. It’s a humbling and frightening reality for any man to confront. What was even more powerful was the story behind his struggles.
This man had been dealing with a serious illness for some time, the first symptom being a fall from a tractor. But he kept it to himself. His pride, that ingrained belief that we can handle everything on our own, prevented him from telling anyone. His unwillingness to accept help early on actually hindered his diagnosis and treatment.
This story is a powerful reminder. I encourage all men to embrace the strength of brotherhood. We don’t have to live alone in our struggles. Share your fears and challenges with others—we are surrounded by people who care and want to help.
