Scripture tells us again and again that our words matter. They shape atmospheres, guide hearts, and even set the course for our families. In Proverbs 18:21, we are reminded that “The tongue has the power of life and death.” Every sentence we speak, over ourselves, over our spouses, over our children, plants seeds. Some grow into confidence, courage, and purpose. Others can grow into doubt or discouragement.

That’s why God calls us to steward our words with intention.

It Starts in the Heart

Long before a word ever leaves our lips, it is nourished in the depths of our heart. Jesus said in Luke 6:45,

“For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”

Faith isn’t just spoken, it begins as a belief rooted deep within us. Romans 10:10 says, “For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”

What fills the heart eventually becomes the vocabulary of the home. What we meditate on becomes what we magnify.

So we ask ourselves:

What am I storing in my heart? What is overflowing when I speak?

What Is Coming Out of Our Mouths?

It’s a question worth pausing to ask daily. Are our words nourishing or draining? Are we speaking blessings, truth, and identity, or fear, frustration, and negativity?

In our home, we’ve learned that speaking life is not something that “just happens.” It’s a decision, a discipline, and a daily practice. Each morning and night, we take our children through spoken words of identity, seeds we want deeply rooted in their hearts:

“I am smart.

I am kind.

I am important.

I am loved.

I am adored.

I am strong.

I am God’s little princess.

I am Daddy’s little girl.

I am Mom’s big helper.”

These aren’t just cute affirmations. They are spiritual declarations. They are truth spoken out loud so that their ears can hear it, their hearts can believe it, and their lives can reflect it.

Speaking Over Our Family

Then, as a family, we declare our shared values, words that shape our culture and remind us of the kind of home we are building:

“Dornan family values are worship, love, respect, hard work, gratitude, integrity, community, service, communication, and health, spiritual & physical.”

These aren’t just rules, they’re identity.

They’re not demands, they’re direction.

They’re not hopes, they’re declarations we speak over our household every day.

Why Declarations Matter

When we speak identity, we are partnering with Heaven. When we speak Scripture, we are aligning our home with God’s promises. When we speak blessings, we are shaping generations.

Proverbs 12:18 says, “The tongue of the wise brings healing.”

Ephesians 4:29 instructs us to speak only what is “helpful for building others up.”

We don’t leave our family’s identity to chance. We don’t let culture write their story. We choose to speak life, because God spoke life from the beginning.

A Challenge for All of Us

Ask yourself today:

What am I speaking into my home? Into my marriage? Into my children? Into myself?

If your words were seeds, what kind of garden would your home become?

Let your heart be filled with God’s truth, so your mouth can overflow with life. Continue speaking identity, Scripture, and purpose over your family. It is one of the most powerful spiritual disciplines we can practice.

Because in the end, our words don’t just describe our world
